ZIB - ZERO IMISSION BUILDING
'The Urban Garden'
The site is located on an inwards plot along the riverbank of the Ketelvest and the Kouter square.
The project 'Urban Garden' is designed to form a green leisure and education platform within the existing urban city structure of Ghent. With the design we have the possibility to create a connection between the existing Kouter square, that contains various functions and the riverside of the Ketelvaart and Ketelvest by the integration of a bicycle and pedestrian bridge. Besides the connection we choose to design a canopy that creates a semi-sheltered public space that includes a sitting area, bicycle parking and charging points for electrical bikes. A greenhouse for educational purposes and for the city inhabitants to reconnect with nature, an animal shed and mushroom growing place and a workshop space for cooking and education 'from production to consumption'. Along the riverbank we provide a leisure dock that could function as a gathering place for social activities and a connection to the water. We choose for an accesible extensive green roof that prevents the workshop space from overheating in the summer, offers the opportunity to collect the rainwater through infiltration and creates a nice green spot within the city center to visit.
The project is designed to be a zero impact building. The most important building material is CLT (Cross Laminated Timber) or solid wood. CLT is a very eco-friendly material that contains a lot of design and ecological advantages. Every single step is well thought out to gain back energy instead of consuming it. Besides that the project gives back to the neighbourhood in terms of recreation, leisure, greenery and education.
